Regulated price versus exchange price

Bulgaria has both a regulated and a free (exchange) price of natural gas. The regulated price is approved every month by the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) and is the price at which the public supplier sells gas to the end suppliers and to the district-heating companies; it also drives the prices of household customers on the regulated market. The BETP exchange price is a market price – the result of supply and demand for a specific delivery day or period – and is the price at which participants on the free market trade. The two move in the same direction, because both follow the European gas hubs, but the exchange price reacts immediately to market conditions while the regulated price is set once a month under the EWRC methodology.
